Footprint 90051 Honing Guide, Colors May Vary Reviews
It is difficult to get your chisel into this device so it is flat across the stone. It is the same thing as the Robert Larson 800-1800 Honing Guide. I would ususlly have the sharpening start on one side or the other.
I had thought that the narrow roller might allow side-to side rocking, but since the blade edge helps to stabilize the assembly horizontally, there was no rocking. In use I found that the guide did a good job of maintaining angles. I simply matched the existing edge angles by lightly honing and adjusting the blade insertion depth as needed. Chisels mount in the narrower inner chanel and plane blades in the outer chanel. I have used this honing guide with DMT diamond stones on a set of Hirsch chisels as well as on plane blades up to 2" wide.
I used, coarse (blue), medium (red) and fine (green) grits, and was able to achieve nice even edges. In all, this guide does exactly what I need it to do and for a reasonable price. If you want to set a precise edge angle you would need a protracter since the guide does not have any calibrations (the instructions suggest using a ruler).
